Kyoto Nishijin-ori Textiles

西陣織とは、京都（西陣）で生産される先染め紋織物の総称で、錦、緞子、朱珍、絣、紬などの多彩な糸を用いた高級絹織物です。
糸を先に染めて織り柄を表現する技法で織られ、白生地を後から染めたりプリントしたりする後染めの織物と比べ、深みのある高級感漂う表現力が特徴です。

西陣織の歴史は古く5 世紀末からこの伝統が伝えられており、応仁の乱を期に大きく発展します。
その伝統は現代まで受け継がれ、昭和51年2月26日付で国の伝統工芸品に指定されました。

Nishijin-ori is a type of yarn-dyed fabric produced in the Nishijin area of Kyoto with a variety of high-grade silk fabrics including nishiki, damask, satin with raised figures, kasuri, and pongee.

These textiles are woven using a technique which dies the threads first, rather than dyed or printed-on later like piece-dyed textiles. It is known for its expressiveness and air of luxury.
Nishijin-ori has a long history and has continued on since the end of the 5th century. Its industry developed further after the Onin War.
This tradition continues to today, and since February 26, 1976, it has been designated as a recognized traditional craft of Japan.
